How do I know if my child is autistic?

Young autistic children have differences in how they communicate and spend time with others. They may:

  • Not look others in the eye

  • Have a hard time sharing play like peekaboo with others

  • Not yet talk

  • Not yet use other body language like pointing

  • Echo or repeat what others say

  • Like to play alone

They have repetitive behaviors. They may:

  • Focus on playing a certain way, like lining or sorting toys

  • Have big reactions to changes like going to new places or trying new things

  • Flap their hands or look out of the corner of their eye

  • Not like bright lights or loud noises

Many children with and without autism show these signs. Talk with your child's doctor or therapists if you notice signs of autism. Ask for an autism evaluation. Connect with others and find supports now.
